Students Unions, Peace and Unity

In 1984, the government of Pakistan banned student unions in educational institutions with the intention of promoting discipline and reducing political activism. However, four decades have passed and it is time to reconsider the ban and allow the formation of student unions once again.

One argument in favor of lifting the ban is that it hinders the development of critical thinking and leadership skills in students. As stated by Ammar Rashid “If student unions are bad for education, why are our controlled campuses ranked among the worst in the world?” Students need a platform where they can freely express their opinions and engage in debates, as well as develop their leadership abilities. Allowing student unions will provide this platform and promote the growth of well-rounded individuals who are equipped to contribute to society.

Moreover, the ban on student unions has not achieved its original goal of reducing political activism. Instead, it has driven political activity underground, leading to more covert and potentially dangerous forms of activism. As noted by human rights activist, Jibran Nasir, “Forbidding students from joining unions will not stop them from engaging in political activism, it will only drive it underground where it will be harder to monitor and control.” By lifting the ban, student unions can become a safer and more structured platform for political engagement.

Additionally, the ban on student unions is inconsistent with Pakistan’s democratic values. A democratic society should promote the freedom of speech and assembly, including in educational institutions. As stated by lawyer and human rights advocate, Asma Jahangir, “Denying students the right to form unions is a violation of their fundamental rights and goes against the principles of democracy.” By lifting the ban, Pakistan can take a step towards becoming a more democratic society.

 The ban on student unions in Pakistan has been in place for 40 years and it is time to reconsider its relevance. The ban hinders the development of critical thinking and leadership skills, drives political activism underground, and goes against democratic values. As noted by Dr. Aasim Sajjad Akhtar, “The youth is the future of our country, and their voices must be heard.” Lifting the ban on student unions will provide students with a platform to develop as individuals and contribute to society.

The ban on student unions in Pakistan has had far-reaching consequences for the country’s educational system and society as a whole. The ban on student unions may be seen as an infringement on freedom of expression and assembly. This can damage the reputation of the government and may lead to further mistrust among students and the general population.

By giving students an opportunity to participate in democratic processes and engage with community issues, student unions can help foster a strong sense of social responsibility and civic-mindedness. Student unions can provide opportunities for inter-institutional collaboration and networking. By bringing together students from different schools and universities, student unions can help to build relationships and foster collaboration between students from different backgrounds and with different experiences.

The ban on student unions may be seen as a violation of the rights of students and may cause resentment towards the government. By lifting the ban, the government can demonstrate its commitment to the rights and well-being of students and work to build trust and respect.

Student unions can be a positive influence in the development of young people. These arguments highlight the many benefits that student unions can bring to students, educational institutions, and society as a whole. By overturning the ban, the government can support the growth and development of students and create a more positive and dynamic educational environment.
